Birdhouses with Friends

Birdhouses with Friends

Challenge

Developing social and emotional skills and character in children is crucial for their well-being and future success. With the fast-paced world we live in, children are often missing out on opportunities to learn these skills. The challenge was to create an event that would not only be fun but also provide a space for children to learn and grow.

Goal

We recognized this challenge and set a goal to create an event that would promote social and emotional skills and character development among children. "Bird Houses with Friends" was created as an interactive activity that not only allowed children to construct birdhouses but also provided opportunities for them to learn how to work together and build positive relationships.

Solution

Things That Matter, with their volunteers partnered with the YMCA. Together, they were able to provide a safe and fun environment where children could learn and grow. Volunteers worked alongside children, teaching them basic woodworking skills, and providing guidance on how to construct a birdhouse. In addition to the technical skills, volunteers modeled the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, showing children how to work together and treat one another with kindness.

The result of this collaboration was an event that not only taught children valuable skills but also gave them a sense of accomplishment and pride in what they had created. Volunteers were recognized for their hard work with a self-care day voucher for a free massage with a local massage therapist, and the children left with their very own birdhouses and newfound skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives
