Reuse in style
After School with YMCA
Challenge
As our society becomes increasingly aware of the importance of environmental sustainability, we are faced with the challenge of reducing our use of single-use plastic bags. These bags are a major contributor to pollution and harm the environment in numerous ways. With shopping and consumerism on the rise, the problem of plastic bag waste becomes even more pressing. The challenge was to find a way to promote sustainability while still allowing for creativity and fashion to thrive.
Goal
The YMCA, in one of their after-school programs for K-4th graders, recognized the challenge of promoting sustainability while still being creative and wanted to provide a fun activity for the youth that teaches them about the importance of caring for the environment. They set a goal to help the young people create and customize reusable tote bags that could be used instead of single-use plastic bags.
Solution
With the help of volunteers, the youth were taught about sustainability and how they can do fun things while caring for the environment. Volunteers worked with the youth to create and decorate their own reusable tote bags. The activity was a success and not only taught the youth about the importance of caring for the environment but also encouraged them to be creative and express themselves.
